Guru Purnima Celebration
On the auspicious day of Guru Purnima I wish to convey my deepest blessings to you all. Purnima, means full moon. The full moon that falls in the month of July is celebrated as Guru Purnima. This year it falls on 30th of Jul. It is a day dedicated to the worship of our Guru, the spiritual master who lights the lamp of wisdom in our hearts and leads us from darkness to Light. This was the day tradition tells us that Sage Vyasa the celebrated author of the Vedas, the Puranas and the Vedanta Sutras began writing the biggest epic in the world the Mahabharata. He invoked Lord Ganesh and requested him to write down the book on his behalf. He needed a quick writer because the book was very long 100,000 verses. Lord Ganesh agreed to do so with a condition that he will do so provided Vyasji will have to dictate so fast that he should not have to stop his writing in the middle. If his writing stops because of delay in dictating then he will write no more. Vyasa agreed to this but put a condition to Ganesh that when he writes he has to understand the meaning of what he is writing and then write and not like modern day stenos who type without understanding what they are typing. This day is traditionally celebrated to mark that occasion and with this all Gurus are reverentially worshiped.
The tradition of reverence to the Guru, worship of the Guru, ungrudging service to the Guru is a very well established one and is strongly imbedded in the culture of this land. May your own mind on this day turn and tune itself with the Guru. May you meditate more on this day to achieve the tuning and benefit from the guidance that follows. May you yourself be a Light on to others.
With much love
